报告摘要：

We consider a finite-state Markov process in which the states are classified into a small number of groups.  However, you cannot observe which individual state the process occupies, but only which group of states it belongs to. The result may be usefully described as a (partially observed) semi-Markov process.     

We describe applications to biological ion channels that regulate electrical activity in the nervous system. In doing so we need to allow for the finite resolution of recording equipment that results in some occupations of a group being too short to be observed.
